Prior to the establishment of Singapore as a trading hub of the British in the 19th century, the city we know today as a bustling port and a hectic center of economic activity was once a sleepy fishing village at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula. Variously known as Puo-luo-Chung (tip-of-the-peninsula in the 3rd century) and Temasek ('Seatown' - 14th century), Singapore came into its own with the spread of British colonialism.

The founder of modern day Singapore was Sir Stamford Raffles, who in his attempt to get a foothold to the major trading routes to the Far East, established the East India Company here in 1919 and declared Singapore to be a free-trade port. In the short span of five years, Singapore saw an influx of Chinese, Malay and Indian immigrants all eager to make their fortune - from a small town of 150 Singapore expanded into a metropolis of 10,000, and was a port of call for traders from all over Asia, the Middle East and even the United States. In 1832, Singapore was declared as the capital of the Straits of Penang, Malacca and Singapore. 1869 saw an increased growth in trade and traffic with a new quicker trading route to the East via the Suez Canal.

World War II saw Singapore being briefly controlled over by the Japanese - a period made infamous by the incarceration of Allied forces in humiliating conditions in the Changi prison camps. After the Allies won the war, Singapore was briefly handed back to the British, but movements towards self-government were growing. The first Prime Minister of Singapore was Lee Kuan Yew of the People's Action Party, who assumed the post in 1959 and subsequently held the reigns for 31 years. Lee engineered a union with Malaya, Sabah and Sarawak in 1963 to further Singapore's economic ends which lasted a short 23 months - Lee's ambitions in furthering his own party's political agenda was not acceptable to Malay leadership, and the union disintegrated. Not that this hindered Singapore's economic status - the city-state grew from strength to strength and remains one of the strongest economic centres in the world.

Lee's governance saw a long period of political suppression and rigid social order, factors that only contributed to Singapore's economic growth. However his successor Goh Chok Tong, who became prime minister in 1990 was far more liberal, and a period of one-party rule is slowly coming to a close, with opposition parties beginning to rear their heads in the government.

The economic recession of the 1990's merely dented Singapore's economy, as did the effect of the spread of SARS, a highly virulent form of flu, and the Iraq war of 2003. Singapore River
Strolling along the banks of the Singapore River, or taking a river cruise, one sees some of the famous landmarks of Singapore. Clarke Quay and Boat Quay are filled with shops and restaurants, and houses of government, temples and museums can all be viewed from the comforts of a luxury boat.

Apart from the main island, the smaller islands of Singapore state provide interesting getaway spots for the tourist. These islands can be reached by taking a ferry from the World Trade Center or hiring a boat form the Changi Jetty or the Clifford Pier. The island of Pulau Ubin still retains early 20th century rural life. St. John's island has a resort with water sports and quiet bungalows, while snorkeling and diving are popular on Lazarus and Sisters Islands.

Singapore lies at the southern-most tip of the Malay Peninsula, close to the equator. It consists of Singapore Island, measuring approximately 42 km wide and 23 km long, and 58 other small islands. It is about 655 square km in area, just about three and a half times the size of Washington D.C.

Singapore's climate is hot and steamy. The temperatures range between 22 degrees Centigrade and 30 degrees Centigrade, and humidity at a high 75%. Singapore's rainy season is from November to January, with its drier months being May to July. Intermittent, short showers, however, can be expected through out the year.

About 50% of the Singapore is urban area, with the main city area concentrated in the south along the banks of the Singapore river. The central business district is at the river mouth, and is conjoined by Chinatown. Singapore's colonial districts lie north of the business district, and further north one encounters the multi-ethnicity of Singapore with its Arab Street and the distinctive area of Little India. Jurong is an urban concentration on the west, comprising mostly of an industrial district. Its older residential districts, the international airport, and a major beach park make the East Coast remarkable. Huge complexes housing Singapore's mushrooming population lie in the northeast. Singapore is connected to the Malayan mainland by two causeways, the older of which is a 1 km causeway to Johor Bahru.

The remaining 40% of Singapore's miniscule land mass is taken up by forestland, developed parks, plantations, reservoirs and open military areas. To compensate for its lack of natural space and flora and fauna, a number of parks and natural reserves have been developed, which house flower gardens, zoos, bird sanctuaries, beaches and even rainforests. Most of the zoos and parks simulate the natural environment and avoid confining the animals in cages as far as possible.

One of the few primary jungle spaces left on the island is in the Botanical Garden, which also has the world's largest display of orchids, and over 60,000 plants.

The Bukit Timah Natural Reserve, one of the world's few rainforests within city areas, has more plant species than the whole of North America, and is home to such rare specimens of animals such as lemurs, pangolins, long tailed Macaques, mouse deer and thousands of others. East Coast Park, South City Park and Fort Canning Park have many tourist playground attractions. The world's largest bat, the flying fox can be found on Pulau Ubin, one of the islands off the mainland.

Singapore also sees thousands of migratory birds. The Jurong Bird Park exhibits over 8000 birds of 600 species.

Singapore's zoo is one of the worlds most famous, with its unique Night Safari. It houses over 2000 animals, including 40 endangered species.

Singapore River—This is the very origin of Singapore's prosperity, with the Merlion (the city's tourism icon) steadfastly standing guard at the mouth of the river. Bounded to the north by the Java Sea and the south by the low Bogor Hills, Indonesia's overwhelming capital, JAKARTA, is one of the fastest-growing cities in the world. From a mere 900,000 inhabitants in 1945, the current population is well over ten million and continues to grow at a rate of 200,000 every year. The capital currently sprawls over 656 square kilometres of northern Java. Unfortunately, few foreign visitors find the city as alluring as the local population, and down the years Jakarta has been much derided. Its dangers have been much exaggerated, and except for the period around Suharto's downfall in May 1998, the safety of foreigners has not really been in question. Yet the suburb of Kota in the north, the former heart of the old Dutch city, still retains a number of beautiful historic buildings, as does the neighbouring port of Sunda Kelapa. The capital also has some of the country's finest museums, including the Maritime Museum, the Wayang Museum and the National Museum.

The site of modern-day Jakarta first entered the history books in the twelfth century, when the Pajajarans, a Sundanese kingdom based in West Java, established a major trading port at Sunda Kelapa and held on to it for over 300 years. In the early sixteenth century, the Islamic Sultanate of Banten, 50km to the west, invaded the city and renamed it Jayakarta, "City of Victory"; the date of their invasion, June 22, 1527, is still celebrated as the city's birthday today. By 1619 the Dutch had won control of the city and the newly named Batavia became the administrative centre of their vast trading empire; it was also given a facelift, with a new network of canals and a host of imposing civic buildings. When the Japanese invaded Batavia on March 5, 1942, the city was once again re-titled Jayakarta, or Jakarta for short. Immediately after World War II, a British force engaged the new Republic of Indonesia. Dutch power declined, and many of their buildings were pulled down. In 1949, Sukarno entered Jakarta, amid scenes of wild jubilation, to become the first president of the Republic. In the following two decades, ugly, Soviet-style monuments sprouted like warts on the face of the city and huge shantytowns emerged on the fringes to house economic migrants from across the archipelago, a population shift that continues to this day. Since then, Jakarta has continued to be the focus of Indonesia's changing political face, most recently and dramatically with the demonstrations against Suharto in May 1998, during which time the city was looted and set alight by angry mobs, who were apparently orchestrated by elements in the army. The city is much less tense at the moment, though the armed forces still maintain a presence. Some radical Islamic groups have emerged, but the general population remains stoically oblivious to them.

Amsterdam is a compact, instantly likeable city. It's appealing to look at and pleasing to walk around, an intriguing mix of the parochial and the international; it also has a welcoming attitude towards visitors and a uniquely youthful orientation, shaped by the liberal counterculture of the last four decades. It's hard not to feel drawn by the buzz of open-air summer events, by the cheery intimacy of the city's clubs and bars, and by the Dutch facility with languages: just about everyone you meet in Amsterdam will be able to speak good-to-fluent English, on top of their own native tongue, and often more than a smattering of French and German too.

The city's layout is determined by a web of canals radiating out from an historical core to loop right round the centre. These planned, seventeenth-century extensions to the medieval town make for a uniquely elegant urban environment, with tall gabled houses reflected in their black-green waters. This is the city at its most beguiling, a world away from the traffic and noise of many other European city centres, and it has made Amsterdam one of the continent's most popular short-haul destinations. These charms are supplemented by a string of first-rate attractions, most notably the Anne Frankhuis, where the young Jewish diarist hid away during the German occupation of World War II, the Rijksmuseum, with its wonderful collection of Dutch paintings, including several of Rembrandt's finest works, and the peerless Vincent van Gogh Museum, with the world's largest collection of the artist's work.

However, it's Amsterdam's population and politics that constitute its most enduring characteristics. Celebrated during the 1960s and 1970s for its radical permissiveness, the city mellowed only marginally during the 1980s, and, despite the gentrification of the last twenty years, it retains a laid-back feel. That said, it is far from being as cosmopolitan a city as, say, London or Paris: despite the huge numbers of immigrants from the former colonies in Surinam and Indonesia, as well as Morocco and Turkey – to name but a few – almost all live and work outside the centre and can seem almost invisible to the casual visitor. Indeed, there is an ethnic and social homogeneity in the city centre that seems to run counter to everything you may have heard of Dutch integration.

The apparent contradiction embodies much of the spirit of Amsterdam. The city is world famous as a place where the possession and sale of cannabis are effectively legal – or at least decriminalized – and yet, for the most part, Amsterdammers themselves can't really be bothered with the stuff. And while Amsterdam is renowned for its tolerance towards all styles of behaviour and dress, a primmer, more correct-thinking big city, with a more mainstream dress sense, would be hard to find. Behind the cosy cafés and dreamy canals lurks the suspicion that Amsterdammers' hearts lie squarely in their wallets, and while newcomers might see the city as a liberal haven, locals can seem just as indifferent to this as well.

In recent years, a string of hardline city mayors have taken this conservatism on board and seem to have embarked on a generally successful – if often unspoken – policy of squashing Amsterdam's image as a counterculture icon and depicting it instead as a centre for business and international high finance. Almost all the inner-city squats – which once well-nigh defined local people-power – are gone or legalized, and coffeeshops have been forced to choose between selling dope or alcohol, and, if only for economic reasons, many have switched to the latter. Such shifts in attitude, combined with alterations to the cityscape, in the form of large-scale urban development on the outskirts and regeneration within, combine to create an unmistakeable feeling that Amsterdam and its people are busy reinventing themselves, writing off their hippyfied history to return to earlier, more stolid days.

Nevertheless, Amsterdam remains a casual and intimate place, and Amsterdammers themselves make much of their city and its attractions being gezellig, a rather overused Dutch word roughly corresponding to a combination of "cosy", "lived-in" and "warmly convivial". Nowhere is this more applicable than in the city's unparalleled selection of drinking places, whether you choose a traditional brown bar or one of a raft of newer, designer cafés, or grand cafés. The city boasts dozens of great restaurants too, with its Indonesian cuisine second-to-none, and is at the forefront of contemporary European film, dance, drama and music. The city has several top-rank jazz venues and the Concertgebouw concert hall is home to one of the world's leading orchestras. The club scene is restrained by the standard of other main cities, although the city's many gay bars and clubs partly justify Amsterdam's claim to be the "Gay Capital of Europe".
